Jacob Sheep
Page One

Easily recognized by their multiple horns (both sexes have them) and spotted fleeces, Jacobs are a small to medium size, hardy, ancient breed. They are thought to have originated in the Middle East, moved to Spain, and appeared in Great Britain in the sixteenth century, where they were prized as ornamental livestock, as well as thrifty 'easy keepers', with outstanding maternal instincts. Adult ewes rarely exceed 120 pounds, and rams run about 150 pounds. They can have two or four well balanced horns, which make them quite easy to handle. The fleeces are exquisite: open, lofty, semi-lustrous, with a silky handle, and moderate crimp. They range in weight from 4 to 7 pounds, with an approximate staple length of 4 to 7 inches, and a fiber diameter of 48s-56s. The spotted coloration can be spun into a complete spectrum, from white through gray (called lilac) to black. These intelligent sheep have distinctive, friendly, inquisitive personalities, rarely need hoof trimming, and are absolutely beautiful to watch out in the meadow. We breed for the finest fleece, and the strongest hornsets in both our rams and ewes.

My Jacob ewes have just started lambing, and I will have some spectacular lambs available in June 2006. The sire is French Creek Mederic, four horns, great markings.
