| Considered a critical conservation priority now, the wool of these majestic long-wooled sheep made medieval England famous. Big, handsome, graceful and docile, their fleece is curly and lustrous, with a prominent wave and uniform length over the body, falling over the forehead in cords and lying on the body in distinctive locks. The average count is in the 40's. The fleece grows approximately an inch a month, so at shearing time the staple length is at least 12 inches. (Some breeders shear them twice a year, but we shear only once a year.) Ewes and rams are polled, with mature ewes weighing 200-250 pounds, and rams 250-300 pounds. Our average fleece weighs 3-115 pounds. We specialize in the rare Black Cotswold, whose fleece ranges in color from grey to sliver blue, to jet black. Lambs are often born with 'badger face' markings, and lighten with age. All of our breeding stock are triplets, and have consistently produced triplets, which they easily raise on their own. |
